D6 Magic Blade Tables

When you acquire a magical blade, either finding an artefact or having one created for you, roll 5d6 and assign as you wish.


Found

Over 100 years old, forged for a legendary hero by a famous blacksmith.

Over 500 years old, forged by dwarves before their kingdom fell.

Over 1000 years old, forged by cyclopes before their empire crumbled.

Over 5000 years old, crafted by elves before their realm perished.

Over 10000 years old, forged by lizard creatures before their civilization disappeared.

Over 50000 years old, forged by beings whose name no one remembers.

Created

Forged by a (1-5: dwarf; 6: cyclops) who has never seen the light of the sun.

Forged by the royal court’s smith using the latest scientific knowledge.

Forged as the life’s work of a village blacksmith, repeatedly crafted, split, the chips fed to geese, cleaned, and reassembled over decades.

Forged in the presence of a magician who bound a (1-2: demon; 3-4: spirit; 5-6: elemental spirit) into the blade.

Forged in a dragon’s flame.

Forged in distant lands, using the secrets of a foreign people.


Either way, it’s made from a special material.

Special Material

Made from the iron of a fallen star. A nearly black metal.

Newly forged from the remnants of old, famous blades. A dark weaving pattern.

An alloy of two types of steel, flexible and strong. Intensely light and dark grained.

Moon silver.

Simple, honest steel – of the highest quality. Polished to a glaring shine.

A precious metal alloy. Gold bronze.

Cyclops steel. Shiny, with a prismatic reflection.


The blade has gifts. The first gift is comparatively simple. The second gift requires an adventure to unlock.

The First Gift

The steel reflects no light. Dark clouds seem to swim within it. Living beings are outlined in red – even at night or in fog.

In the darkness, a soft humming seems to emanate from the weapon. When a hungry creature is nearby, the hum grows louder.

The handle is … possessive, particularly when blood is in the air. It’s hard to let go of it after a fight; it’s practically impossible to have it knocked out of your hand.

Once blood touches the blade, it begins to subtly glow, and it won’t stop until it’s washed off or dried.

If the blade touches someone who has killed within the current year, the voices of all their victims can be heard whispering quietly.

The blade sterilizes. Its wounds never become infected, and water that drips slowly over the blade is purified of all poisons.

The Second Gift

The weapon can be thrown with deadly force and accuracy, even if it is not designed for it.

The wielder can speak the language of any creature that has ever been slain by the blade. Once someone has been wounded by it, the wielder can hear the victim’s (confusing, unclear) thoughts as long as the wound is bleeding.

The blade can penetrate any armor and even slowly cut through stone.

In the shadows, the wielder becomes invisible as long as they remain still. Under moonlight, their steps are silent.

During a thunderstorm, lightning always strikes the blade if it is not being held by its owner. The surrounding area is devastated, and once the owner picks it up, the next strike with the blade – now crackling with blue flame – unleashes the lightning.

The wielder can make the blade glow like lava, searing flesh and steel alike.

The Second Gift’s Price

The wielder of the weapon must give some of their life force to the blade and must therefore sleep for an additional hour for every life they end with the blade’s powers.

The blade must be coated with fresh blood to unleash its power. Once it has dried or been washed away, its effect is nullified.

All feline creatures hate the wielder of the blade, the larger the creature, the more intensely.

The wielder can no longer lie and must answer all questions truthfully as long as they have a tongue.

The wielder is twice as hungry and thirsty as usual and must eat meat every day.
